What are the Different Types of Recreational Vehicle policies in Calgary?

At RV Direct, our brokers are campers and RV owners. We specialize in RV insurance because it’s our passion. Our goal is to find the best RV insurance in Calgary to allow you to adventure and relax without worrying.

We’ll go over the types of RVs we insure and everything else you need to know about RV insurance in Calgary.

Travel Trailer

Travel trailers are any trailer that’s towed or hauled by your vehicle. This category includes truck campers, pop-up trailers, fifth wheels, hybrids, toy haulers, and more. These RVs come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

Let’s say you’re towing your trailer from Calgary to BC to set up for a summer vacation in Radium. Unfortunately, a herd of deer causes an accident and your trailer is damage. Will your auto insurance cover your trailer? Unfortunately, no, it will not. If you have an accident without RV insurance, you must pay to replace or repair your trailer.

For full RV insurance coverage, you will require a separate RV insurance policy. We can help you get the right protection for your trailer that suits your needs and budget.

Motorhome

Many Calgarians have motorhomes they use to escape to warmer weather during the long, cold winters. Others use camper vans for practical adventures. They’re a great option if you’re looking for luxury or don’t want to purchase a bigger truck as a tow vehicle.

Insuring a motorhome is unique because it’s also a vehicle. Our specialized RV insurance policies cover both third-party liability and physical damage to your motorhome and belongings. It’s really the best of both worlds.

Park Model

A park model is a smaller home (about 400 sq. ft) on wheels that is often placed permanently in an RV park or lot for full-time or part-time use. The park model recreational vehicle is less mobile and used frequently for the long-term.

The park model is similar to a mobile home and is insured in a similar way. It is usually a property insurance policy and there are requirements around mounting and skirting the park model.

Mobile Home

A mobile home is often known as a manufactured home. They come in a few different sizes and are generally used as a seasonal or full-time residence. A mobile home is insured similarly to a regular home through a property insurance policy. If you don’t live in the mobile home full time, it will be a little different due to increased risks of damage going unnoticed.

Ask one of our expert RV insurance brokerages about what to expect from a typical mobile home insurance policy. (basic coverage, add-ons, exceptions, more).

Note: We provide up to 6 months of coverage in the U.S. for motorhome and travel trailer owners. This includes RV’s that are NOT parked permanently or left in the U.S.

What does RV insurance cover in Calgary?

The coverage options for recreational vehicle insurance in Calgary depend on the type of RV you’re insuring and how you plan to use it. It will also depend on your insurer and individual policy options. For example, a mobile home you use as a seasonal residence will be different to insure than an RV you travel around in full time.

At RV Direct, we can help you create an RV insurance policy that fits your needs.

Below, we go over the key features of each type of recreational vehicle insurance: travel trailer, motorhome, mobile home, and park model.

4 Add-Ons for your RV in Calgary

1. Full-Time Living & Snowbirds

Full-timer RV insurance applies to people who live in their RV full-time, whether they’re travelling or stationary. How they’re using their RV will impact their insurance.

Snowbirds are those who head to warmer weather for up to six months of the year with their RV. Often, Calgarians head to Florida, Arizona or Vancouver Island. Wherever you’re headed in the US and Canada, we can help insure you.

RVing full time or snowbirding usually means you require additional liability and contents coverage. It’s also important to inform your insurer where you plan to go, as most insurers have a time limit on how long you can spend in the US.

Two common scenario are:

  • You live in Calgary for 6 months of the year at a permanent residence and use your RV to live in the U.S. or another province in Canada for the winter months. You’ve got an RV resort lot so just drive your RV there and back to Calgary.
  • You’ve got a beautiful piece of property and want to live there full-time. You’ve just picked out a mobile home that will be placed on the land and you’re looking to transition to that life and are looking for insurance coverage.

At RV Direct Insurance, we provide various insurance options for full-time RVers. Our partnerships with various insurance companies allows us to give you more options to suit your needs.

2. Roadside Assistance

If you’ve ever gotten a flat tire or run out of gas, you know how awful it is to be stranded with an RV. We offer extra roadside assistance coverage for those who want peace of mind when they’re driving. When you really need it, roadside assistance is worth every penny. This can include:

  • Extended towing mileage
  • Trip planning
  • Travel and emergency medical advice
  • Pet assistance

This is in addition to basic roadside assistance coverage included in our trailer and some motorhome policies.

Contact an RV Direct travel trailer broker today for details on the extra roadside coverage. Then get going to your next destination.

3. Guaranteed Replacement Cost

If you’re in an accident and your recreational vehicle is a write-off, the guaranteed replacement cost coverage allows you to buy a new similar RV versus getting money back on your vehicle’s current value. This option is only available for newer RVs.

4. Extra Coverage for your Belongings

Your basic RV insurance policy will protect some of your personal belongings, such as clothing and gear. But you may need more coverage if you’ve got a lot of stuff or have higher-value items. We can also provide extra coverage for things like golf carts. For toys like ATVs or boats, we can offer you separate coverage if needed.

Will my RV Insurance Policy cover Wind, Hail or Storm Damage in Calgary?

Calgary has some wild hailstorms in the summer and many cities in Alberta are generally very windy. Hail can cause direct physical damage to your RV’s roof, sides and even windows. Strong winds can topple an RV, damage your awning, or cause a tree branch to fall on the roof. Lightning can even strike an RV!

Luckily, if you have an RV insurance policy, you’re covered for storm damage including hail and wind. But be careful – leaving your RV windows and doors open can mean you’re not covered if water gets into your unit.

Some policies may also not cover wind damage to your awning as it’s almost inevitable even in a light wind if you don’t retract it.

If you’re unsure what is included in your RV insurance policy, always feel free to call one of our insurance brokers in Calgary for help.
