May Car Shows and Show & Shines in Alberta and British Columbia

This year the good weather came early but usually the May long weekend marks the start of getting to enjoy outdoor activities like having a BBQ sitting on the deck and best of all outdoor car shows and cruises.

There’s a ton of different car events to kick off the summer season. To get the most of it we recommend starting the weekend a bit early on Thursday May 19 with some regular meet-ups in Western Canada:

A&W 4037 – 130 Ave SE Calgary AB Petro Can Fort & 137 Ave Edmonton AB A&W Cochrane AB A&W High River AB Crossroads Church Red Deer AB A&W Maple Ridge BC

If you’re looking for a scenic and interesting drive Cochrane is a great choice. You can stop at MacKay’s Cochrane Ice Cream for a treat or check out one of the provincial parks.

High River also has some access to some stunning views especially if you head west to Longview and take Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail) or Highway 40 if you’ve got some time and are feeling adventurous. The Hitchin’ Post in High River is also a great place to get a burger and a milkshake – and it’s a drive-in!

Friday May 20 also has some regular cruises and show & shines meeting up at:  Rock N’Wash Edmonton AB A&W 122 St & 137 Ave Edmonton AB A&W 80 Glendeer Circle Calgary AB

Friday also sees the start of the Builders Unite #8  Hot Rod/Motorcycle Camp Out in Kelowna BC (call 250-826-0265) which runs until May 23.

Make it a longer weekend and head out on Friday. There are lots of different car shows in BC on both the Saturday and Sunday – there’s something for everyone.

One of these is the Vancouver All British Field Meet ( westerndriver.com ). This internationally-acclaimed event hosts over 500 classic British cars and motorcycles and has sixty vehicle classes. The Meet & Greet kicks off on Friday May 20 2016 at the Truffles Cafe. Saturday May 21 sees the cars line up on the lawn of the VanDusen Botanical Garden. The traditional All Brit Run to Whistler’s Olympic Village takes place on Sunday May 22.

If that’s a little far from home or a bit too ‘posh’ for your tastes there’s lots of other options for Saturday May 21:

These shows are all worth a visit especially the Kaslo May Days Car Show. Not only is there a scenic drive in every direction the May Days events will keep you fed and entertained. In addition to the car show there is a parade a softball tournament live music equestrian and skateboarding demonstrations. You can also enjoy organized walks and bird watching the highly-entertaining logger sports and pavilions full of food and crafts. Saturday is full of activities for the kids and there’s a pancake breakfast on the Monday morning. You can even take a helicopter tour! It’s a great day trip or weekend away not only for the car enthusiast but the whole family.

If you’re just looking to take your car out for a drive heading out to one of the national parks is a great way to spend the afternoon day or weekend. The drive to Waterton Lakes National Park is fantastic and there’s some sightseeing to do in the town itself. You can also check out the nearby bison paddock loop road to see some of these enormous animals. There are many quaint towns to stop in on the way there and they all usually have a quirky store or diner.

Of course Canmore Banff and Jasper are always popular choices for Albertans but the ‘Dinosaur Trail’ in the eastern part of the province is often overlooked. The badlands scenery is fantastic and if you want to pullover you can check out the Royal Tyrell Museum the world’s largest dinosaur the Atlas Coal Mine and many other interesting sites. The Last Chance Saloon is a great place to stop for dinner as well.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and everyone will be at least be able to get out for a safe and fun drive to celebrate the long weekend!
