By Samantha Lemna | January 29, 2019

Whether you’re planning summer family trips or heading south for a snowbirding adventure buying an RV is exciting. It can be hard to figure out which RV is perfect for you as there are so many different types layouts and features  – our buying guide can help you identify what you need. Once you’ve got an idea of what you want your next decision is whether to buy it new or used. I’ll review the pros and cons of both in this article.

Buying New: The Dream

If you’re an experienced RVer and know exactly what you want are planning on spending an extensive amount of time in your RV and/or have a big budget buying new is probably the best option for you.

Pros of buying a new RV:

  • Clean

  • Customizable

  • Warranties

  • Latest and greatest technology and features

  • No damage or wear and tear

Cons of buying a new RV:

  • More expensive

  • Untested

  • May have to wait for a new model or one with exact specifications

  • Higher insurance

  • May have additional fees re: shipping/upgrades

Buying Used: Perfect Compromise

In an ideal world most people would buy a new RV that was exactly what they wanted. But reality means that isn’t always possible. If you’re on a tighter budget don’t plan to use your RV for full-time travels or think your RV needs may change in the next few years buying used is a great idea.

Pros of buying a used RV:

  • Budget-friendly

  • Can get right away

  • Cheaper insurance

Cons of buying a used RV:

  • Takes time to find what you want at the right price

  • No warranty/history

  • Invisible damage – mitigate with inspection

  • May want to upgrade certain features which will cost money

Whether You Go New or Used – Do Your Research

While it can get overwhelming doing your research will help you find the perfect RV for you at the right price. Figure out your budget and check out local RV shows and dealerships to get a feel for what’s out there. Ask yourself how you plan to use your RV including how many people it needs to sleep how often you’ll use it and any must-have features you want. Consider your tow vehicle and how much you’ll be able to tow (you may need to invest in a motorhome or upgrade your tow vehicle.

Some dealerships offer warranties on their used RVs and many offer financing for new and used RVs as well. Look up reviews for the dealership as well as the brand and model of RV that you’re interested in.

Whether you buy new or used insurance is a must from the point you sign the paper. This will protect your investment and your future plans.
