The content of your trailer can be just as important or even more important than the trailer itself. It’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with what your policy does or does not cover especially when it comes to your belongings in your trailer. While you can always ask your broker we’ve gone over the basics in this article.

Are my belongings covered in my RV?

If your trailer is covered under your home insurance policy it will really depend on your policy since coverage can vary significantly. If this is the case for you be sure to talk to your broker  and you may want to get a separate RV policy to ensure you’re covered.

If you already have a separate RV policy – great! Your belongings are likely covered but be sure to understand what the limits of coverage are and if there are any exclusions. Sounding like legalese? Check out our dictionary for some help or again talk to your broker for more information.

Why should I keep proof?

You probably have paperwork for your trailer but you may not have paperwork for all of your belongings. When insuring the contents of your trailer it is always useful to keep an inventory of what you keep in there during camping season and winter storage. It is disheartening to have to worry about this but you honestly have to if you want to make the claim process easier down the line. Keeping receipts and taking pictures are also great ideas pictures help prove what condition your items are in. You can also take video of the interior of your trailer.

So what kind of insurance should I get for my RV?

Generally speaking specialized RV policies are the way to go when it comes to getting coverage on your RV and its contents because  they often offer much better coverage. You can get trailer insurance which can be customized for your needs.  In short something that may suit one person may not suit another due to differing needs so as with everything to do with insurance it is worthwhile to talk to your insurance broker about the kind of coverage you need before you decide.
